How to Use a Dog Bath Robe After Baths, Swims and Rainy Walks

A dog bath robe sounds like a luxury, but for many owners it quickly becomes an everyday essential. It keeps your dog warm after a bath, catches the water before it ends up on your walls, and lets your dog relax while they dry. Here is how to use one properly after baths, swims and rainy walks.

Dog bath robe, drying coat or towel coat: what is the difference?

They are mostly the same thing. "Dog bath robe," "dog drying coat," "dog towel coat" and "dog robe" all describe a wearable towel that wraps around your dog's body and fastens in place. Some are designed with a hood or sleeves, but most, including ours, are a wrap-around coat with straps at the neck and belly.

How to use a dog bath robe after a bath

1. Squeeze out excess water. While your dog is still in the tub, run your hands down their body and legs to push off as much water as you can.
2. Towel the head, ears and paws. A robe covers the body, so use a small towel for the face, inside the ears and between the toes.
3. Put the robe on. Lay it over your dog's back, fasten the neck strap first, then the belly strap. Leave room for two fingers under each strap.
4. Let your dog settle. Give a treat or a chew and let them rest somewhere warm while the robe absorbs water.
5. Check the fur. Once the fur feels damp rather than wet, take the robe off. Brush long or thick coats as they finish drying.

After a swim or beach day

Rinse off salt water or lake water if you can, then put the robe on before your dog gets back in the car. It keeps them warm on the ride home and keeps sand and water off your seats. Pack the robe in a bag so it stays dry until you need it.

After a rainy or muddy walk

Wipe the worst of the mud from paws and legs at the door, then pop the robe on. Your dog can wander the house while they dry instead of shaking water across the floor or climbing onto the sofa wet.

How long should a dog wear a bath robe?

There is no fixed time. It depends on how wet your dog is, the length and thickness of their coat, and how warm your home is. Short-coated dogs may feel dry fairly quickly, while dogs with thick double coats take longer. Check the fur now and then and remove the robe when it feels damp rather than wet.

Is a dog bath robe safe?

Yes, when it fits well and you supervise your dog. Make sure the straps are snug but not tight, the robe does not drag under the back legs, and your dog is not chewing the fabric. Take it off before bedtime or if your dog seems uncomfortable.

Caring for your dog's robe

• Shake out hair and sand after each use and hang it to air out
• Fasten the velcro before washing so it does not snag other fabric
• Machine wash at 30°C (86°F) and tumble dry on cool
• Skip fabric softener and bleach, which reduce absorbency
• Wash dark colors separately
